Inverse design?

Are there outcomes that just can’t be designed, is the domain so complex that only skilled practitioners using well established existing patterns can design within it? Indeed and this is the area of inverse design, how do you make progress solving problems when you don’t have 18 years to learn the whole compendium of knowledge?
